ngel group leaders from the US and Canada have written papers on best practices--or perhaps "common practices"--of operating angel groups. The two 2002 US papers originated from "Angel Organization Summits," sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation in 2002 and 2003, while others were developed by the ACEF Best Practice Committee in 2007.

These resources are below:

ACEF Best Practice Papers on the Angel Investment Process.  The ACEF Best Practices Committee worked in concert with students from Columbia University and New York University to describe the processes used by some of the most respected angel groups in America.  The papers, released in 2007, include:

PDF Valuing Pre-Revenue Companies – The Kauffman Foundation’s Web site for high growth entrepreneurs, eVenturing.com, commissioned a series of articles and tools on valuation of early-stage companies.  The articles are mostly written by two nationally-known angel experts:  Luis Villalobos (TechCoast Angels) and Bill Payne (Vegas Valley Angels).

Business Angel Groups Growing in North America - White paper establishing trends, organizational structures and general best practices for operating angel groups, established as a result of Angel Organization Summit I. (2002)

Angel Investing Group Best Practices - Managing Members, Guiding Presentations and Finding the Right Deals - White paper produced as a result of Angel Organization Summit II. (2002)

Primer for Angel Investment in Canada - National Angel Organization (NAO) Chair Henry Vehovec led this project which compiles best practices, research and ideas intended to encourage competitiveness on Canadian angel investors. Published by NAO with financial support from RBC Financial Group.  (2003)  NAO has developed an updated book:  “Age of the Angel:  Best Practices for Angel Groups and Investors.”  Version 1.0 is available in printed version only and also to NAO members via a Web collaboration platform.
